Context and Challenges

The Grand Paris Express project includes 160 km of metro lines and 80 stations, requiring massive construction work that will generate significant greenhouse gas emissions. Yet, the project’s ambition is not limited to facilitating travel for Ile-de-France residents but also aims to improve environmental conditions, particularly by reducing greenhouse gas emissions through modal shift from cars to public transport and by enabling better urban planning (densification and increased diversity).

It was therefore important to precisely monitor the greenhouse gas emissions related to the construction sites, as well as to evaluate the future consequences of the metro in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, particularly through modal shift to public transport and the densification of the areas served.

Objectives

After designing the initial methodology (CarbOptimum tool) and conducting assessments for the 7 lines of the Grand Paris Express between 2012 and 2016, Stratec was tasked with updating the approach by taking into account feedback from project managers and new data from the construction sites.

The mission also had to integrate numerous recent studies on the project’s effects on urban development and mobility.

Methodology

The approach comprised three phases:

  • Iincorporation of feedback and updating of emission factors
  • Integration of new studies on urban and mobility impacts
  • Analysis of results and dissemination through reports and communication materials

Results

Le projet a abouti à un bilan actualisé des GES émis et évités par le Grand Paris Express, présenté aux parties prenantes, notamment pour appuyer des financements verts (green bonds).
