Stated Preference Surveys on Mobility Behaviour in Switzerland (2021 and 2025)
In Switzerland, stated preference (SP) surveys, conducted every five years since 2010, aim to analyse mobility behaviour (choice of transport mode, route, departure time) in conjunction with the Micro-Census Mobility and Transport (MRMT). Stratec is responsible for their design and implementation. These surveys cover all types of trips made within the national territory: short, medium, and long-distance trips, for all purposes.
Location: Switzerland
Client: Federal Office for Spatial Development (ARE), Switzerland
Date: 2019 – 2022, 2024 – 2026
Partners: Significance, RouteRank, Rapp (2021)
2021 Survey
In 2021, Stratec designed the stated preference survey in detail: questionnaire drafting, principles of SP exercises (mode choice, route, departure time), proposed values, …
The team developed an automated process to produce personalised questionnaires based on MRMT data.
Two pre-tests (100 then 700 people) allowed for refining the method before the main survey (4,250 usable responses).
Stratec also ensured statistical control, data cleansing, and delivery of the validated database to ARE to feed federal, cantonal, and SBB models.
New Survey in 2025
In 2025, Stratec is once again leading the study, still conducted in collaboration with Significance and RouteRank (which provides a multimodal routing tool).
The methodology is based on the same four steps: questionnaire design, execution (pre-tests + main survey), data management and quality control, final documentation.
The survey methodology is refined in certain aspects compared to 2021, but must remain comparable as one of the objectives is to observe if and how behaviours evolve over time.
Results
The objective of these surveys is to collect reliable and precise data, enabling, at a later stage, the construction of robust models for mode choice and departure time, and the calculation of time values and elasticities. The ultimate goal is to robustly forecast transport flows by mode.
