Training in Multimodal Modeling

Stratec was commissioned by BNETD to train a team of their experts in the use of their multimodal travel model.

Location: Ivory Coast
Client: National Bureau of Technical Studies and Development (BNETD)
Date: 2025

Context

In 2013, Stratec developed a multimodal travel model for Greater Abidjan (MMGA) for BNETD. This model was subsequently used and updated by various consultants during strategic mobility studies.

In 2024, in a context marked by the updating of structural data (RGPH 2022, SDUGA 2, new counts and surveys), BNETD formed a new team dedicated to transport modeling. The objective is now to strengthen its internal skills so that it can manage and update the model autonomously, particularly with a view to preparing for the Abidjan Metro Line 1 project and other structuring mobility projects.

Objectives

The mission entrusted to Stratec had two complementary objectives:

  • Training five BNETD experts in the principles and practices of multimodal modeling, using the MMGA,
  • Preparing the model’s update, by taking into account new available data and developments in the mobility context in Greater Abidjan.

Methodology

A 7-day intensive training course was organised in Abidjan, led by two experienced Stratec modelers.

It was structured around theoretical modules, practical workshops, and direct application exercises on the Greater Abidjan model.

The training program covered the following topics:

  • Introduction to multimodal modeling and its strategic uses;
  • Structure of the Greater Abidjan Multimodal Model (MMGA),
  • Construction and updating of the demand model (based on RGPH 2022 and new surveys),
  • Construction and updating of the supply model (road networks and public transport, including Metro Line 1 project and feeder services),
  • Scenario creation and simulation,
  • Export, utilization, and critical analysis of results,
  • Quality control and best validation practices,
  • Error correction and management of special cases.
